In a world full of fast, mass-produced everything, there’s something special about choosing handmade. When you support a small business, you’re not just buying a product, you’re becoming part of someone’s story. And at Kilo Soap Co., that story starts with me, Leigh.
Back in 2020, during lockdown, like so many others, I suddenly found myself out of work. I had been working in hairdressing, but when the world shut down, so did my job. It was a tough time, but also a turning point.
I had already been making handmade soap as a hobby, something I genuinely loved doing. The creativity, the process, the satisfaction of using something I’d made with my own hands… it lit me up. So, I decided to take a leap. I got certified, sorted out my CPSR, and launched Kilo Soap Co.
What began at my kitchen table quickly grew into something I never imagined. I started sharing my soaps online, and to my surprise (and total delight), the reviews started rolling in. People loved them. And not just liked them, really loved them. That’s when I knew I had created something that mattered.
When you support a small business like mine, you're doing more than just placing an order. You're helping someone build something from scratch. You're choosing care, thoughtfulness, and individuality over mass production. Every soap I make is made because I love what I do, and that love carries through into every bar.
There’s no big marketing machine behind Kilo Soap Co. It’s just me, making small batches, pouring, cutting, packaging, and sending them off with the hope that they brighten your day a little. I’m not out here claiming to be 100% organic, or chasing trends, I just make good soap that feels amazing, looks great, and smells even better.
I use fragrance oils because they open up a world of scents I can play with creatively. Every bar is crafted to be a little luxury in your routine, whether that’s the creamy lather, the skin-loving ingredients, or the colours and shapes that make you smile when you see them in the bathroom.
What keeps me going more than anything is the community that’s grown around Kilo Soap Co. From the first few sales to now, I’m constantly amazed at the support. Every message, review, share, and reorder means the world. It's not just about selling soap, it's about building something meaningful, something personal, something real.
Soap might seem like a small thing, but for me, it changed everything. It gave me a way to keep going when things felt uncertain. It gave me a chance to create. And it gave me the opportunity to connect with people who appreciate the handmade, the carefully crafted, and the heartfelt.
